Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

A more alert, youthful and less tired look: That's the typical goal for patients considering eyelid surgery. Women often also complain that loose tissue creates difficulty with make-up application. Both men and women find that sagging tissue creates an undesirable impression of stress and advancing age.

Blepharoplasty makes the eyes appear larger and more open by removing excess or loose skin and fatty tissues which produce bags around the upper or lower lids.

However, there are limits to the amount of tissue that can or should be removed from the eyelid. Therefore, Dr. Levens is extremely careful and precise in planning every eyelid surgery, striving to produce the most significant improvement possible within the bounds of utmost safety.

GOOD CANDIDATES FOR EYELID SURGERY:

Healthy men and women with loose, sagging or bulging tissue above or below the eyes are good candidates for this procedure. If you have any type of eye disease or symptoms, Dr. Levens may request that you have a thorough eye exam prior to scheduling eyelid surgery to ensure that you are a good candidate.

THE PROCEDURE:

Incisions are placed in the fold of the upper eyelid and immediately inside the lower eyelid, to make them inconspicuous. Excess skin is then removed from the upper eyelids. If excess fatty tissue is producing bulges or bags, that tissue is carefully removed to produce a natural lid appearance.

After rechecking the lid, the incisions are closed with tiny sutures. The incisions inside the lower lid do not require sutures. A special laser is sometimes used on the skin of the lower eyelid to help minimize fine lines and wrinkles, and to shrink excess skin.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Risks of injury to the eye, infection, or impairment of vision are extremely small, but do exist and should be considered. Other risks common to all surgical procedures such as bleeding, infection and scar tissue formation occur in a very small percentage of cases. Dr. Levens will give you more detailed information about these risks in our written information and during your consultation.

Eyelid surgery cannot remove every wrinkle from the eyelid area. Also, there are always some differences between your two eyelids. Eyelid surgery can reduce those differences, some slight difference may remain after the procedure.

RECOVERY :

You will have minimal discomfort following eyelid surgery. There will be some swelling for the first 2-3 days, but it fades rapidly by day 3. The pink coloration (from the laser treatment) of the lower eyelid may last 2-3 months, but can be completely covered with make-up in 5-7 days. After 7 days, you can apply makeup to the lids to hide any residual traces of bruising and usually return to your normal activities.

Eyelid surgery is an out-patient procedure. The typical schedule of recovery is: Bruising and swelling, 5-14 days; return to work & social activity, 7-14 days; aerobic or strenuous activity, 14-21 days. Any aerobic activity that increases your pulse over 100 also increases your blood pressure, and could make you bleed if this activity is resumed too soon after surgery. You should not drive for at least one week following your procedure, or until all swelling is gone and your vision is normal. It imperative that you avoid sun exposure.
